July is the first month of inter-monsoon season and the weather picks up across the south of the country again, especially in the 2nd half of the month. The north and east coast continue to enjoy balmy weather with temperatures in the mid-30’s. The hills around Kandy and Nuwara Eliya will be cool but with lower rainfall than most of the year. The south west and south coast will be subject to the odd shower, but nothing to write home about.
A highlight in July (or August depending on year) is the Festival of the Tooth in Kandy, a religious celebration that commemorates the first teaching given by Buddha after he attained enlightenment. It dates back to the 4th century AD when the sacred tooth relic of Buddha first arrived in Sri Lanka from India and is now the most spectacular national celebration.
