Travelling to Sri Lanka in January is a great way to start your new year and is perfect if you’d like to arrange a tour that travels extensively across the island visiting, for example, the Cultural Triangle, Kandy, Tea Country (Hatton or Nuwara Eliya) and any one of a number of National Parks. Udawalawe, Yala and Sinharaja parks will be dry but lush as the rainy season only finished a month or so ago.
The South and West coast beaches will be basking in wall to wall sunshine with little rainfall. Average temperatures on the coast will be around 30 °C, the Cultural Triangle in the mid-20’s and the Tea Country, due to the altitude, down around 18-20 degree’s. Perfect for touring but an extra layer will be needed in mornings and evenings.
In January the north and east of the island is still affected by the Maha monsoon, so you will probably get more rain in these areas.
