September is a month of heavy showers and the coast and hill country are best avoided. However by now the countryside is in full bloom with rice paddies shining with a particularly vibrant green, the moats around the Angkor temples are full of the sacred water lily and the air has been washed clean allowing for the clearest of photos.
Tonle Sap Lake will be at its peak covering as much a 4,500 square miles, making it the largest in south east Asia and well worth a visit. As a suggestion, taking an overland tour from Siem Reap, through the countryside to Battambang to the Capital Phnom Penh will be an ideal way to make the most of this particularly scenic, if still wet, time of year.
