Sarojin, Khao Lak

Hotel Grade: Deluxe

Introduction

BABA Ecolodge, Koh Phra Thong Island

Hotel Grade: First Class

Introduction

The desire to escape the crowds is a familiar refrain, but not necessarily to a backpacker honeypot. The BABA Ecolodge ticks all the boxes, nestled on a 12 km long stretch of beach of Koh Phra Thong Island, a 1 hour transfer from the mainland by longtail boat. Undeveloped and nature rich, the resort is the dictionary definition of “ecolodge” set in the coastal forest with a range of detached wooden lodges offering an authentic, natural beach stay with the comfort of good food and copious hospitality. A very different experience to the main resorts, not for everyone as nature rules, but a joy for those looking to disconnect from an increasingly anodyne world.

Facilities / Experiences

Life is very simple here as it’s the natural world and beach that bring visitors to the island. At the centre of the ecolodge you’ll find the 2 story bar and restaurant that looks out over the simple naturalistic gardens down to the sea. The menu changes every day and offers a range of Thai classics with a few western options. The bar is well stocked with everything you’ll need.

Just a few steps away you’ll find the Jungle Spa Sala that offers a range of treatments and massages. Whilst the in-house yoga instructor offers a range of yoga, meditation Pranayama options to suit all levels.

The coast can be explored by kayak, heading out to small islands or following the mangrove creeks that pepper the coastline. Fishing and snorkelling trips can also be arranged. The island interior is essentially savannah grassland which is extremely rare and you can explore early morning / late afternoon by 4x4 to see the abundant birdlife and odd monkey.

Accommodation

The lodge is made up of 27 traditional wooden stilted villas that are sprinkled along a small section of the beautiful and deserted 12 km beach. Each is different with its own unique character and charm, offering guests the choice between beachfront or jungle views, all secluded and complemented by private gardens and decking areas. There’s no air conditioning, but the rooms are raised on stilts and designed to take advantage of sea breezes with ceiling fans. The bathrooms are ensuite but relatively simple with solar heated water. Mobile reception is scarce and WiFi can be enjoyed at the restaurant / bar. No minibar, no TV - this is a place to disengage with the wider world.
