Fort Printers

Grade - Boutique First Class

Overview

The Fort Printers is a restored 18th century mansion that’s now an elegant boutique hotel offering understated elegance and personal service in an intimate setting. Nods to the building’s former lives add to the feeling of history, with the original printing press still in situ and the rooms each given an education-related name harking back to its time as a schoolhouse. Located in the heart of Galle’s Old Town, close to the fort ramparts and amongst the pick of the craft and antique shops, it’s a great base from which to explore this UNESCO World Heritage site. It also boasts one of Galle’s best restaurants.

Facilities

There’s a small pool set beneath a frangipani tree in the pretty interior courtyard. Enjoy breakfast here and then enjoy dinner in the hotel’s restaurant, famous for its menu that focuses on seafood and organic local produce. The guest kitchen has a stocked fridge with tea and coffee making facilities. Communal sitting areas are well appointed with deep sofas and alcove seating and almost have the feel of a Moroccan riad.

Rooms

In the historic wing there are five double bedrooms all named after academic subjects that echo the building's former incarnation. Four of the rooms (Headmaster's, History, Geography and Art) are on the first floor encased by a beautiful shuttered wooden veranda and the fifth (Prefect's) is on the ground floor directly next to the pool. The new wing’s rooms are across the narrow road and are much more modern in style with polished concrete floors and neutral decor. All rooms are en-suite with air-conditioning, ceiling fan and WiFi.
